<p>Lately I have written about toxins in our water and food supply. This installment is about a diet that has gotten a lot of attention all over the world. This newsletter about the Atkins Diet and its effects on your body.</p>
<p>Beef, It’s What’s For Dinner</p>
<p>And breakfast, and lunch, and snacks. That, and all other things of the protein persuasion, such as chicken, eggs, cheese, fish, and lard. Yes, Atkins was the diet that enabled its followers to ingest as much fat and protein as their little hearts desired while still shedding those extra, unwanted pounds. Many even seemed to get results from the Atkins diet without even having to step foot in a gym. Even more remarkable were those revolutionary new “desserts” that were both Atkins friendly and approved. Sure they tasted like they were manufactured in a nuclear weapons facility, but they were still synthetically sweet, and would help in the elimination of those darned sweet cravings. What the perfect diet Atkins was.</p>
<p>Eat as much fat as you wanted, consume all of the steak and bacon you could, and wash it all down with an aspartame-infested soda and non-exercising exercise regiment. The life of a lazy king.</p>
<p>The Fat Makes The Calorie, Not The Man</p>
<p>It seemed perfect, but seemed would have to become the operative word. Many of you have lived on this earth long enough to know that perfection really doesn’t exist. There is no perfect child, no prefect insurance plan, no perfect way to say, &#8220;We should see other people,&#8221; and no perfect diet. Dr. Atkins himself would have argued that cholesterol levels didn&#8217;t increase with the added intake of high fat foods, but many researchers and scientists have proven otherwise. Heart disease, as well as other heart conditions, has been attributed to followers of high protein and high fat diets. Some studies are starting to show the correlation between these diets and heart problems, and to me, even the potential risk of losing my ticker is enough to make me eat a piece of bread.</p>
<p>One particular side effect that is hazardous when eating excess amounts of fat and protein are the increased levels of acidity within the body, which are mostly caused by the ketone acids that are produced during ketosis. High </p>
<p> levels of acidity can lead to a loss of much needed calcium from within bones. Calcium, which is an alkaline material, is depleted when acid levels get to be too high. This is your body’s way of attempting to neutralize its ph balance and bring everything back to a normal level of functioning. Lack of calcium, over time, can lead to an increase in fractures, the erosion of teeth (teeth are made of calcium), and the depression of the central nervous system. High acidity also forces the kidneys and the liver to work a lot harder than they typically would, so people who have preexisting problems with these organs are at risk of developing even more severe problems when on Atkins.</p>
<p>Aside from leading to dehydration, acidity can also cause high toxic levels within the body, and over time, these toxic levels can lead to permanent and caustic side effects. One way to help with the removal of these chemicals would be to drink water, but it has to be the right type of water. Many waters have surface tensions that are so high, that the cells in the body can’t absorb the water that they need. One way to help eliminate this problem would be to add the right colloidal minerals to the water that you are already drinking to allow for more nutrients to enter the cell and toxins to come out.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s no &#8220;I&#8221; in Vegetable</p>
<p>Carbohydrates are considered food for the brain, and even more importantly, many simple carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables, contain important antioxidants that are needed to provide a healthy immune system. If you are a follower of Atkins or any other low carb, high fat, and high protein diets, then I don&#8217;t stay on these particular eating plans for too long a period of time. If you absolutely can’t bring yourself to eat a noodle or an apple, you should at least attempt to take some kind of antioxidant supplement.</p>

Whether you’re a sucker for the “quick fix” drive-thru, or just someone who pays more attention to the TV Guide instead of the calories on the back of food packages, odds are you struggle like the rest of us keeping the pounds off—and it’s starting to affect more than just your waistline.</p>
<p>According to the Centers for Disease Control, 67 percent of all Americans, about 200 million, are overweight or obese. That number has doubled since 1980. Currently, about one-third of American children are either obese or at risk of becoming obese, and while being overweight can increase your risk from everything from high blood pressure, diabetes, to back pain, the buildup of poor self-esteem from psychological and social problems can only make things worse.</p>
<p>I’ve seen it before. From the patients who enter my office, to my own family and friends that gather around my dinner table—the struggle they endure while undertaking a weight loss or diet program just isn’t fair. Yep, I </p>
<p> said it. If you want to lose weight, and keep it off, those diet plans—Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers—may not be the answer for you.</p>
<p>I know, I know, I’ve heard it all: “I ate nothing but soup and lost 10 pounds!” Or, “I haven’t had a single carb in two weeks and lost five pounds!” The common thread with all these “fad diets” is just that—they’re fads. Just like those bell bottom pants you were once so fond of, eventually the allure wore off. How many times have you thrown a defunct diet in the attic trunk, just like you did those pants?</p>
<p>I should probably admit something before I go any further—I’ve battled the cookie tray temptations like anybody else. But I’ve learned that if there’s any rule to live by, the quick and easy way out—magic diet pills, fad programs, etc., simply don’t work.</p>
<p>When all else fails, stay positive, and excuse yourself from the table of ridiculous and outrageous diets. I hope that those who continue to get lost, while on the road to weight loss, never stop trying to get to their destination.</p>

<p>&#8220;Your eyes are bigger than your stomach,&#8221; my mother said, which meant, &#8220;No, you can&#8217;t have a milk shake.&#8221; She didn&#8217;t think my 10-year old appetite was sufficient to finish all that food, and she was probably right. Her motivation had less to do with whether I&#8217;d eat it, and more to do with the cost of the meal. She hated the idea of wasting money if I left some food uneaten. I remember thinking, &#8220;Who cares if I don&#8217;t eat it all, I just want a milk shake!&#8221;</p>
<p>Some of us still carry that thinking, &#8220;Wasted food is wasted money,&#8221; but consider the opposite. If you paid for it, whether you eat it now is irrelevant. Now you can spend the food how ever you please whether it be by eating some, giving some away or even tossing it in the garbage, it&#8217;s now yours. The food belongs to you. You do not have to eat it to get your money&#8217;s worth.</p>
<p>Super Sizing is Costing you More than Extra Money</p>
<p>Now restaurants encourage us to order the next size larger, by pricing the larger size only slightly higher than the regular. This appears to be a good value so why not go for it? Of course, if you get the bigger portion now you must &#8220;get your money&#8217;s worth&#8221; by eating it all, and that&#8217;s the problem. You are already receiving your money&#8217;s worth when you take possession of your order. Whether you eat it doesn&#8217;t make it a better value. Learning to throw away extra food is far better than eating it even though you&#8217;re no longer hungry out of some faulty reasoning about value.</p>
<p>The main cost in a fast food meal for the producer is preparation, packaging and serving, not the food. It costs pennies for the syrup in your drink, but you pay over a dollar. A small order of fries costs nearly the same as a large for McDonalds to prepare consequently their profit margin is larger when they sell the larger size. Perhaps they give you a drink you didn&#8217;t </p>
<p> want in your &#8220;value meal.&#8221; That&#8217;s not a good value if you wouldn&#8217;t have ordered it in the first place. Ordering the ultra huge super duper size costs the company a few more pennies and that&#8217;s why the pricing makes sense for the restaurant. Convince the public they are getting good value by offering bigger servings for only slightly more money, and they will most likely order the larger size, which is exactly what has occurred.</p>
<p>The worst of it though is what all this super sizing has done to our bodies. We&#8217;re now a walking advertisement for super size America.</p>
<p>Finally, consider the cost to your wallet of Super sizing:</p>
<p>* 3 fast-food meals per week X .79 cents extra for the &#8220;Super Value Meal&#8221; = 2.37 dollars per week</p>
<p>* 3 person family X 2.37 dollars = 7.11 dollars additional expense per week</p>
<p>* 7.11 dollars X 52 weeks/Year = Over 369.72 dollars a year! That&#8217;s almost a dollar a day.</p>
<p>Nearly 370 dollars per year extra expense just because of those three little words, &#8220;Super size it.&#8221; Think of what you could do with an extra 370 dollars every year.</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t want to give up your fast-food habit, at least cut back to ordering a regular sized meal and leave the super sizing for the big boys.</p>
<p>Take a look at your regular eating and drinking habits, especially away from home, and see where you can make some changes that will both save you money, and help you lose some weight at the same time. Super sizing is only a good value for the food industry, not for you or your waistline.</p>

<p>Throughout my childhood and teenage years I watched as my mother tried every fad diet under the sun. I recall one time she ate boiled cabbage and nothing else for a whole week. I felt my mothers’ frustration and misery, however I could not understand why it was so difficult for her to lose weight and keep it off – until that is I became a weight management coach.</p>
<p>For the past two years I have been assisting people to achieve their ideal weight and in this time I have experienced what contributes to a successful weight loss story.</p>
<p><B></p>
<p>Getting serious &#8211; </B>It all starts with you and how serious you are about losing weight. The key to successful weight loss is partly dependent on your level of commitment. How would you rate your seriousness on a scale of 1 – 10 (10 being deadly serious)?</p>
<p><B></p>
<p>No quick fix &#8211; </B>If you have made the commitment to get serious about losing weight then you need to make the commitment to do it safely and effectively. One piece of invaluable advice my own family doctor passed onto me is that slow and steady is always the best option.
